Welland Valley Road Race

A strong team of Stone Whls raced the Welland Valley Road Race on Sunday 18th March. Paul Belfield got away on the first lap and managed to keep away on his own until a small group of top riders attacked up the hill on the second lap and got across to him. The group tried to pull away from the bunch but was a bit disorganised to take advantage of the gap and therefore got caught by the chasers a few miles later. Then with 2 and half laps to go Andy Eagers from Derby attacked and got a small gap. I jumped as fast as i could and managed to bridge the gap quite quickly. Together we worked hard to keep up a good tempo hoping that the Stone team would be controlling the bunch behind. We managed to keep away and pulled out a lead of a minute at the end. On the finishing hill we both were neck and neck until the road flattened out then Andy pulled away from me in the last 100mtrs and won.
I came 2nd Overall (and 1st A cat) very pleased but very cold. Wayne came in around 9th (4th A Cat), Richard Barnett was 10th (6th A Cat), Paul Belfield was just behind in the bunch. Nick Dickens was the unlucky one and punctured. Ian Noons riding the 2nd race also finished in the bunch.

A good day for Stone Whls !! but all suffered from the wet and conditions.

Thanks for the teaam work guys - Much appreciated.

There are a few more details on the Welland Valley Web page.

Good ride Ian, WELL DONE in grim conditions.

Interesting day 1st Paul away then you away Stone Wheelers certainly took part in the race. As ever good fun to ride as a team in the A group to get 2,4,6... should be a GOOD SEASON.

Well done to Ian with his 2nd place finish at the 'Filth Waltonne'...and everyone else.

I think anyone who finished this race on Sunday deserves some respect, I dont think I saw any finisher who wasn't shivering profusely at the end,I have never been so cold, filthy or wet on a bike and then trying to fix a flat in those conditions wasn't nice, definitely road racing at its worst, I'm now considering taking up tiddly winks as a hobby.
